02 CRV stalled, 2 mechanics can’t help

Topic starter

2002 Honda CRV, automatic, 189,000 miles at time of issue. 2 certified mechanics could not pinpoint the issue. One mechanic idled it at 2000rpm for 20 minutes and pulled zero errors or codes.

Going about 30 in stop and go highway traffic, suddenly the RPMs went to zero and gas pedal had zero response. ALL ELECTRONICS REMAINED ON. Radio unaffected, AC kept blowing cool air, gear selector was still illuminated in green “D”. Power steering still working, brakes still working.

I pulled over, turned off ignition and it started back up without problem. Any ideas what this could be? Wouldn’t think alternator because electronics were on, only the engine stalled.

Read below for more details if you want

Other concerns this car has given:

1. very poor acceleration compared to years ago. It used to zip and now it really slugs.

2. Shuddering while idling. Sometimes at the peak of shuddering the engine will almost cut out but stay on, similar to a manual engine cutting off.
3. A loud rattling sound on the passenger front side when accelerating in the 2000RPM’s/30mph, that disappears after 30mph+

Any insight awesomely appreciated, I really hope to hit 200k before it stalls again

2 certified mechanics could not pinpoint the issue.

What do you mean by certified? They have worked on this car before-right?

Go to a mechanic who has worked on this car before who has a high level scan tool.

Did you check for a vacuum leak? The poor acceleration and rough idle could be due to a vacuum leak. I'm not sure about the loud rattling, that may be a separate issue. Also, did the mechanic use a scan tool to see what the fuel ratio is running at (lean or rich). He should at least have done some diagnostics with his scan tool.

Start by replacing the fuel filter and pressure testing the fuel pump -

Also when we’re the valves last adjusted?

Can you please make a YouTube video of the noise and post the link here?
