Scotty,
I have 220,000 miles on my Lexus with no Powertrain replacement. Looks and runs like a new car. It has a 5000 towing capacity with the factory tow package. I am pulling a travel trailer right at that weight. I drive easy and, unless going downhill, keep it out of OD. Is there maintenance I should do more often because of towing? Oil changes, trany flush, etc?
Yes. It is recommended you increase the transmission fluid change interval to around 20,000 miles if you are doing frequent and heavy towing and do not have a transmission cooler. It might be a good idea to add a transmission cooler to your vehicle to reduce the chance of transmission failure.
If you want to reliably tow at the maximum capacity its very important that all vehicle maintenance is up-to-date and upkept in addition to increasing the transmission service interval.
Drain and fill is always better. Do not flush tranny fluid. Change every 30K miles on that. 5000 miles oil changes. Put new coolant every 5 years.
If I were you, I would not tow with the maximum capacity.
I know it is Lexus and bullet proof but considering the age and mileage, I would try not to push it too much.
