When in 2wd the dash indicator is normal. When switched to 4wd, the indicator goes blank and the car stays in 2wd

Well so many things can do that. You'd have to check the wiring to the four-wheel drive system, the switch that turns it on and the actuator inside the transfer case that activates the four-wheel drive. Start by testing that and pray it's not a computer system failure which you could also be, but you would have no way of testing that only a pro mechanic could do that
