100k miles Tundra or New Ram 1500

Hi,

I am shopping for a full size truck. I found;

1) The price for Toyota Tundra with average 100k miles and good history (no accident, service record and one owner) approx $35k.

2) I got a deal on a new 2022 Ram 1500, V8, extend cub out the door $36k.

I went through through the reviews, and no doubt the tundra is the best!

but I am confused which one is a better, used Toyota vs New Ram because they are coming with the same price!

thanks

Tundra. Even a used one will outlast a new half ton RAM

I hear you on Tundra pricing.  You do get what you pay for, and certainly a 2016 Tundra will be better for long term reliability than a 2016 Ram.

But the Ram shouldn't be terrible.  2016 was not their worst year, and the 5.7 Hemi's from that vintage are mostly solid.  200,000 is certainly do-able; my wife's 2013 Grand Cherokee with the same engine is getting close to 180 and purring like a kitten.  It's really had no major drive line problems.

However, I would assume you will run into more than an average number of minor and mid-severity issues: suspension faults, electrical gremlins, that kind of stuff. Not catastrophic things, but enough to get on your nerves.  (Good news is that the Bighorn trim generally has a minimum of electrical options added on.)

I would definitely get a pre-purchase inspection, because you have to assume there is some reason the previous owner is selling it.  (and listen to a cold start to see if/how much it ticks.)  But if it checks out, it should be OK.  But try to talk down the selling price... you will want a couple grand in reserve for problems that crop up in the next 12-18 months.

Good luck!

Thank you. I appreciate your time to answer my question

I am shopping for a full size truck.

You must have a fleet of them, by now..

No, it is not again! I am searching since months but the price for a new trucks are unrealistic! Good one we are talking about $60k average. Even used one in good conditions with average price $35-40k. For me it is a very big investment and I want to buy one that can last with me for 15-20 years! May be for you it is not a big deal to buy a vehicle with this cost and trade it frequently but for me I can not effort that! This is why I keep asking and trying to be educated from experts!!!

You yourself did your research and arrived at this conclusion, so then why are you still considering the Ram? Do you want an inferior vehicle?

The price of the Tundra is crazy. Don't even think about buying it. As far as the new Ram goes, I've seen a few RAMs of that generation (Hemi V8 and 8speed auto) with over 150k miles and still going strong. If you need a truck now, then go for the RAM.

I am looking to buy full size truck and my preferred one is Tundra but they are very expensive. I do and 2016 Ram 1500 with 73k miles. The truck is well taken care of it and asking for $27,500. It is a hemi engine 4wd big horn. Please let me know your recommendation and if you know there is any issue with this year. Can it go over 200k without any issue if I take care of it?
