2015 Lexus RX350 in Texas with 160K miles

maintained very well

 

question: what should I be checking that may break soon?  Water pump?  Etc…

Everything. Best to have a good mechanic check it out for you before purchase.


@chucktobias My apologies. We own the car and have since 2017 purchased with 42K miles on it, certified from Lexus. So far, hasn't had one major component replaced; thus, that's why I'm asking figure something's gotta give soon as they don't last forever.


@jimtyler1502 At that mileage you are unlikely to experience major failures any time soon as long as you keep up with maintenance.


@jimtyler1502 Ignore my comment above, I misread your response as saying the vehicle CURRENTLY has 42K miles. Obviously at 160K miles there will likely be some issues that will need to taken care of.

It's not clear from your post whether you own this car or are looking to buy it. Regardless, the opinion of a trusted mechanic is best. You can check out the Learning Centre for general maintenance suggestions for all cars. An owners manual is always a helpful source of information. @jimtyler1502 Lexus recommends replacing the timing belt every 100K miles so install a new timing belt kit using OEM parts soon. Also have the mechanic replace the water pump while he's there. Don't go aftermarket on these parts, use the OEM parts.


@jimtyler1502 My apology! Your 2015 RX350 has a timing chain (instead of a belt) Wouldn't change the water pump unless there's something wrong like a bearing or leaking.


@hixster Understood. Was thinking of at least replacing the serpentine belt for grins and the idlers / tensioners as they appear to be easy to access from the passenger side underneath. But yeah, we don't have any weird noises and I did pull a spark plug from the front (the back three are impossible to reach without removing stuff) and it was dry and the gap was close enough.

Do change the serpentine belt. As for idler and other pulleys, you can change them but I doubt they need changing as they tend to last a very long time, sometimes the life of the car. Couple other considerations.. I change brake fluid (which last forever), PS fluid and coolant every six years whether they need it or not. Hopefully your transmission has been serviced by now, it's something that's often overlooked. One thing I recommend is to run a scan. Check the live data parameters for fuel trims and such, this can give a better insight into actual condition.


@hixster Thanks! I'll do the belt and the PCV valve (valve is rather inexpensive and super easy access. Trans fluid I have never changed, but trans appears to shift and work just fine; I don't plan to mess with it and I understand the risk. I have a $500 scan tool and checked the trims etc... recently and they aren't bad and any of the codes that were there, when cleared, didn't return. I appreciate the thoughts...very helpful @hixster.
