I have a 1965 Dodge Monaco with a 440 cid motor. I was driving it one day, when all of a sudden I heard a muffled "pop" under the dash on the drivers side, and a 7 or 8 second sound (like that of a high pitched whistle from a bottle rocket). Smoke came out of the dash, but went right out of the open window. From that point on, the car discharged and ultimately killed my $300.00 deep cell battery (Optimum). My question...What blew? I'm to big to get up under the dash to look for the problem. Was it a relay of some sort, possibly? Thank you!

As I recall those cars have an ammeter in the dash, that may have shorted out. (All electrical current used in the car flows through the ammeter so a short would be pretty nasty.)
