Hi Scotty!
I know that you don't usually answer questions about motorcycles, but I was hoping you'd make an exception! Anyways, I'm in the process of rebuilding the engine in my 1977 Suzuki GT550 triple. The engine itself has 60,000 miles on it. I've owned it since the bike had 23,000 miles on it, and have always used Amsoil 20w-50 motorcycle oil in the transmission part.
My question is this: while I have the engine apart and the case split, should I replace the bearings that go on the transmissions shafts? In your experience, how long do those bearings (and I guess, similar types of motorcycle transmissions) usually last?
I ride my GT's on a regular basis (I have a '75 as well), and plan on riding the '77 for years to come.
Thanks!!
Jeff
In my experience, the trans bearings will last longer than the rest of the engine. What you HAVE to do is put in all new seals for the trans and engine, those will go bad sooner, and would be hard to fix without the engine apart. New shocks and fresh fork oil will keep you and the bike happier, too.
Is that a two stroke?
If it is I always use Klotz synthetic oil for it and never have to worry about fouling the plugs'
Yes as long as you have the trans apart, replace all the bearings and anything else thats worn. If you're going to do it, do it right
