Car was dying in the middle of a drive. Car would also die when sitting at a stop and then trying to take off. This happened about 5 years ago and a distributor swap fixed it. Swapped out for a new distributor last week and the problem to solve just like last time. Now there seems to be some hesitation during acceleration. I bought a timing light, removed the rubber plug on the front of the engine shined it down in there and got the white Mark to align with the metal pointer. Keep reading about trying to achieve a certain degree of btdc for this car and I noticing that on the timing plate there's a set of three red marks and above is a single white mark. The three red marks are only visible at the beginning of a cold start but once the car has been idling for a while I can only see that white mark and it aligns perfectly with that metal pointer inside the timing hole. I'm just wondering if I should be timing this car at a certain RPM range because the acceleration hesitation was not an issue before swapping out the bad distributor. Spark plugs are new and all the wires are good. Brand new fuel filter. Air filter is good.

There should be a sticker in the engine compartment with the initial timing specification. For more detailed information you might want to consult a shop manual for that car.

@chucktobias I already have that info. I've also looked through the 90 Accord Haynes manual and it mentions both the white timing mark and the three red timing marks and both of those sets of marks are visible at different RPM

@xamplesample If the illustration is accurate it looks pretty straightforward. Of course that car is so old that the problem you are experiencing could be caused by almost anything.
