I pulled the two front axles on my 1990 celica gt-s and I was wondering if the cv axles are interchangeable between right and left side.

The database at rockauto.com shows different left and right axles. As @imperator says, that is typical of cars with transverse engines and end-mounted transmissions. (There are a few exceptions, like mine, that use an intermediate shaft so drive axles are the same on both sides.)

rarely. The transmission is always closer to one wheel
