Hey Scotty!

I have a 1993 Honda Del Sol 5 Speed Manual that I recently bought with 170k Miles on it. I'm unsure when the transmission fluid was last changed and I'm worried about changing the fluid and causing problems with the shifter. Should I or should I not replace the transmission fluid?

Thanks Scotty!

No no that's only with automatics manuals are completely different. You're fine to change it now if you don't know when its been changed last and Scotty recommends changing it every 40-50k miles or so since its cheap and easy to do but when you go buy the trans fluid make sure you get quality stuff and like when I did this for my honda. I just bought the fluid right from the dealership and it was cheap and it's best thing for the job. Also make sure you measure out how much fluid comes out and put the same amount back in. I really like those Del Sol sweet ride and you only have 170k miles that's nothing for a 93 😀

You absolutely should replace the transmission OIL.  It's not called fluid in a manual trans.  Check the manufacturers specs for the correct weight oil, change it out and keep a record of when you did it, then follow the manufacturer's recommendations for change intervals.

If we were back in 1979 I would completely agree with you. LOL, but yes, nowadays especially since some newer manuals use ATF instead of Gear oil. Yes it’s called fluid.

I am fairly certain that back in 1993, they still specified something like 80w-90 gear oil.

Check the owner's or shop manual.

You have a manual transmission, you DO want to change the gear oil in your transmission especially if you don't know if or when it was last done.

That be what ya want. Go with that and not some manual trans gear oil. Most modern mauals use a special type of fluid. Getrag manuals for example use Dexron ATF instead of gear oil.
