Should I buy this old 4Runner

Scotty:

I'm going to be acquiring a 1993 Toyota 4Runner 4x2 for almost nothing (I'm going to offer them $300, I know they'll accept it. I dated their daughter and they still like me). It's been sitting in a driveway for about three years due to a blown transmission. They're begging me to take it away. I'm planning to have it towed and rehab it myself. It won't be my daily driver but a fun adventure toy. Anything I need to look out for on this model? It has 186k miles on the clock and lived in Florida for most of its life.

Ya sure? Make sure the brake lines are still in tact 😉

I'd start by asking what they want for it before offering $300. They may be okay with $100!

My only concern is how much work do you want to put into a 2WD SUV as a toy? I mean no matter what you do you'll be limited without 4WD.

Lol! They still like me! Her Mom did say the brakes had an issue when it rained (it is a 4x2 so that's probably why it acted weird).

Her Dad said give me an offer I cannot refuse. So I think $300 more than reasonable.

This is ambitious but I'm thinking about attempting a 4x4 swap. I'd love the challenge.

Look into that era 4runner forums for more info on that. Im sure its been done before. Itll give you an idea how much work that'll be.

If it has the 3.0 (3.SLOW) v6 it blows head gaskets about every 70k miles.

Just depends how much you have to spend on a transmission, if it gets too pricey, you could have bought a nicer 3rd gen that has better...well pretty much everything.

Yikes. 30 years old.

Have you thoroughly looked at the condition of it? The vehicle value will be less than the thousands of $$ of your disposable income you'll be putting into it.

Have you lined up a replacement transmission and formulated a plan for installing it?  I wouldn't give it another thought otherwise.

It's in good condition other than the paint being faded. Yeah I'm going to watch the head gaskets carefully.
