1995 Toyota Celica ECU failure?

Hello SCOTTY!

I have recently been fixing up a 1995 Toyota Celica 1.8 with a manual transmission. We had put in a used engine that has been working fine until recently. We had put new spark plugs, new timing belt, tensioner and verified that everything was in ok shape. I had drove the car trouble free for at least 50 miles around the neighborhood. The last time the car drove, it seemed to lag. Then the next time we attempted to start it, it would crank, but not start. We have been doing some experimenting and this is what we have noticed so far:

1. Battery is good.

2. Fuel pump works with direct power.

3. All fuses check out fine.

4. Ignition switch is fine.

We have bought at least three ECUs with no difference. The last one we bought was "refurbished" from Ebay. This did not remedy the issue. The reason why, I wouldn't say the engine itself has a problem is because when you are able to direct power to the fuel pump, and crank the engine, it fires up but then dies immediately. There are no other indications of leaks or any other type of malfunction. Please help.

Sincerely,

Bleau's-Clues

have you tried spraying starting fluid through the throttle body?

Visually confirmed good spark?

Not sure why you would dump 3 ECUs into it.

Another thing too is that we can't hear the fuel pump come on before you start it cold.

sounds like you should be checking the fuel pump circuits. Fuses , relays , etc. A wiring diagram is going to make it much easier.

We have and we can verify that they are all ok. We have the dealer repair manual and diagram. The fuel pump works fine. We might check the crank position sensor as the last time we tested it the engine shut off before the pump.
