Hey Scotty,
my dad gave me his old 1996 850 platinum automatic with 47000 miles on the dash, but I think that odometer reading is broken. The engine is a flat 5 cylinder turbo. I wanted to know what you’ve heard about them, anything crazy to look out for? What should be some things to change out of a high mileage car that has only had basic maintenance up until this point? How much power can you make outta one of these things!?
@Yaser's got some good suggestions. Lucky yours is FWD, so no complex Volvo awd system to worry about and no turbo either. The Wheeler Dealers did a 1995 850 T-5R in series/season 15, that's the sleeper.
They are really good cars. I would check all the rubber and plastic parts and change them as needed. Clean the MAF sensor and throttle body. Check all the fluids. For ATF, inspect it and change it of it meets the requirements (search this forum)
It does have a turbo. Saw that the turbo waste-gate is broken. Need to get it replaced this week {black}
My first car was a '97 Volvo 850 with the winter package. I loved every minute of that car, well, until something broke. Fun little car.
Those are good cars and they can last quite some time if well taken care of. However, you wanna make sure you have a mechanic check it out and that nothing is worn out or going bad, and if its good, then go ahead and buy one.
