I have this Sable 97, and like an old car there's a lot going on, but my main problem is that when I press the gas pedal to overtake someone or to incorporate in the freeway it hesitates or rough idles like it drowns, if I depress all the way the accelerator it does rev the engine and a dark cloud appears but still, it's like it chokes and keeping the pedal down just makes it do the same dark cloud and I can't overtake because of this. What can I check to pinpoint the cause?

Have you checked for any codes in the ecu thru the obd2 port? It can be a few problems best way to start would be to have it checked for codes
