I have a 1997 toyota camry 4 cylinder with 225000 miles on. I just recently gassed up and found out i got 17 mpg. Far worse then even city ratings for my car. The best ive ever got was 23. I know the epa ratings are inflated (23 city and 31 highway) but should my car be this inefficient? No check engine codes.
When did you start noticing a drop in fuel economy? As a vehicle ages (and yours is 24-25 years now) it can see a lower mpg. Here’s some things to look at and try:
i keep track when i gas up. i was getting a solid 23 average. then this week i gassed up and it had dropped to 17. checked my math. cant figure out whats wrong. thank you for the link though. i will watch some videos to see if i can figure it out!
Always check the percentage of ethanol on the pump! If more than 10%, … expect a noticeable economy drop. Even if it’s only 15%, … as opposed to 10%, drop will be significant. Very noticeable, …
Other than that, … VVT system often will start acting up, … no longer indexing cams as designed. After all, 225000 miles on it, oil passages to the indexing mechanism are sclerotic with oily gunk by now.
