I’m looking at buying a 98 Subaru Forester with the 2.5 engine for $4500. Has had the head gaskets replaced and has 125,000 miles. Do you think this is a good and reliable car?

It might be OK for about 1/2 that price. (It's 23 years old!) At that age you also need to worry about stuff like the exhaust Y-Pipe which has built-in pre-catalysts. Very expensive part to replace. If it's an automatic transmission pay careful attention to its operation, I believe that would be a conventional 4-speed type on a Subaru of that vintage but even those were not very strong in those cars.
If a mechanic checks it out and says it's OK it might be all right but I'd try to get it cheaper.
