Hi, I have a 40hp 2 stroke direct injection engine. I would like to know if I should run this engine on E5 fuel as all the cheaper gas is E10. Can’t fine anything online about this
Sorry should have added an outboard marine engine not a car engine.
Cars with two-stroke engines have not been sold in the United States for decades. (I might even be the only regular here who has ever owned one.) So it is likely that no one here is familiar with your vehicle, though it would be helpful for you to identify it. So unless someone here has some direct experience we can only recommend that you use the fuel specified by the manufacturer.
Based on my experience with a variety of 2-strokes in land and marine applications, the less ethanol, the better as far as the engine and fuel system is concerned. Ethanol absorbs water from the air (especially with outboards) and can cause degradation of fuel lines, gaskets, fuel tanks and so forth.
That being said, most modern designs are reasonably happy with E10, as long as it doesn't sit for a long period - if it sits for more than a couple weeks, I used Sta-Bil.
Thank you was thinking E10 wouldn’t be good on an outboard marine engine, a bit of confirmation from folk that know better than me much appreciated. Looks like I am on the more expensive fuel from now on
Yeah, if it's a marine engine definitely stay away from E10. Best to use pure gasoline if available.
