I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0 in-line 6 with around 160,000 miles and when it’s cold in the morning and I throw it into reverse, I hear a loud whining sound but only in reverse when it’s cold. Doesn’t make that noise once it’s been driven for a little while. Any thoughts?
I'd start with trans fluid and filter change. I'm also ardament about changing filters when fluids are changed...
@hillbilly
I actually just had my filter and fluid changed not too long ago. Could something else be causing it?
Yes, other things can cause it, just the first place to start ; )
When did the issue start in relation to having filter and fluid change? Or is that why your had it changed? And what fluid was used? Do you know if it's the 1st or 2nd trans fluid change?
@hillbilly
It started getting worse as we’ve hit winter where it’s like 9 degrees now and usually below at night while it sits. I’m pretty sure it was the first change in a long time because when I bought it, the transmission pan gasket was leaking so had that fixed and topped it off with new ATF+4 which is what it calls for.
160 k, I'd baby it and let the car warm up before putting in reverse (close to 185 temp). And start looking in your area for a trans rebuilt shop for the future so you find a good one and are shopping before it's broke allowing you time to make the best decision. And if letting it get to temp in 3-4 minutes before putting it in gear prevents the noise (and wear), it could last a long time but a rebuild is likely in it's future.
