First of all i love you!

The car i want to buy is Rav4 2/3 doors  (XA20)

Secondly.. i have to decide between buying a 2.0 L 1CD-FTV I4-T (diesel) with 115hp or a 2.0 L 1AZ-FE I4 (gasoline) 150hp. I am not sure wich one is the more reliable engine; the diesel has a turbo(scotty doesnt like turbos) and its slower, while the gas engine will be very fun, but i heard that oil usually leaks into the cylinders at high rpms because when reving it up the seals suffer big pressure and so it burns oil (this applies to all cars, i think). Wich engine will last the most in the long run? Diesel acts as a lubricant, while gas acts as a detergent si i think diesel should win the reliability test. What do you think?

Thank youu! {black}:blushed:

Scotty is married, but hey, there’s no harm in trying..

hahaha, its a different kind of love

I would get the later years (2004-2005) with the 1AZ-FE engine, make sure to have a mechanic check it out though. The Diesels are also alright but I heard they were had problems back then, and the turbo adds extra complexity.

I cannot find good mechanics where i live. Everywhere i go there are only young people who dont care and even break stuff around in the car or cause different problems. What should i look for if i chose to inspect it myself or alongside a bad mechanic?

P.S: i randomly asked a mechanic what does he think about toyotas. he replied with every car is the same garbage haha

There is a page in the FAQ about how to find a good mechanic. If you are in a popular country, you could also make a new thread to see if anyone knows a good mechanic there. I think you should invest in a scan tool and scan a car for codes if checking your self. Watch Scottys video on things to check when buying used cars, I think its from 2011. Chris Fix also has a good car buying series from a few years back. Good luck!

Forgot to mention, the 2001-2003 years have a reputation of malfunctioning ECMs and transmission issues, https://www.carcomplaints.com/Toyota/RAV4/2001/transmission/problems_shifting.shtml
That's why 2004-2005 is a better bet.

Thank you! I remember those, i think they are for the automatic transmission only. My choice will be manual

Both are great engines. It all Depends on where you live. If the mechanics know how to work on these diesels, go ahead otherwise choose the gasoline.
