I just got a 2001 Chevy Camaro V6 with 135,000 miles. I am looking to change the transmission fluid and filter. I know Scotty says that if it has never been changed to never change it or else can you risk it slipping. I have no idea if the transmission fluid has ever been changed, but it appears to be red and smells not burnt. The transmission is currently shifting fine with the occasional rough gear change here and there. Do you think I am good to change the fluid and filter?
Please see under FAQ. This gets asked a lot.
Something like probably starting to wear out within the transmission. If you've never changed the transmission fluid, you could likely hurt it instead of fixing it. Clutch material gradually wears off as a transmission ages. New transmission fluid is slippery, the old fluid still has some grittiness to it, which helps it shift. I wouldn't risk it, personally. GM transmissions are known to start slipping after 130k+ miles without a transmission fluid change. If you do decide to do a fluid change, keep it in a sealed container, in case it starts slipping.
