Hey there Scotty, big fan!
I bought a 2001 Camry (150,000k miles) runs really well, cost me only 500 bucks with CEL on of P0401 code for the egr system;
- I troubleshooted the actual EGR valve to find it was breaking, bought new one slapped it on.
- Found some leaks in some hoses in the egr sytem, replaced those
- Replaced the vacuum modulator
- Bought a new VSV (was not clicking)
- All parts are from TOYOTA OEM
- reset the dtc and drove it around highway and street, light went away and stayed off. Everything was green, good to go!
- 3 months later and the light came back onfor same dtc
- I reset the code and drove and everything was back to normal
- Its been 2 weeks since that reset and it still reads as 0 dtc and green
My question is, is there something else causing it to trigger the code off and on from time to time? What do you recommend? , thank you for all you do!

I had the same code on my 1999 4-cylinder tacoma (EGR insufficient flow). I verified that the EGR was working ok. Replaced the modulator with a used one, did NOT fix the problem. Removed and cleaned the EGR temp gauge, that fixed the problem. Easy to do.
