2002 VW beetle 235,000 miles

I have a 2002 VW beetle and I was thinking about changing the timing belt because it never been changed. My question is...do I have to line up the timing marks when I put on the new belt? I mean if I take the old belt off without moving anything and put new one on...what's the difference

It's a little overdue, don't you think?

I'd think if you didn't move anything it should be OK but I have not worked on one of those. If it has variable valve timing that can be tricky. Best to consult a shop manual.
