2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse GTS (3.0 V6) electrical issues

Hi, I have a 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse GTS with a 3.0 V6 and a standard transmission with almost 106,000 miles on it. Pardon me for the long post, but I think all of these details are important Recently, my car started doing some really weird stuff. Sometimes when I went to turn on the heater, the whole car would just shut off. Whenever I was coming to a stop and put my car into neutral, the car would either just completely Stall or the RPMs would drop down really low, anywhere from 100-400. Sometimes when driving, the car would shut off for a split second and violently jolt backwards but spring back to life after that split second, sometimes this jolt happened multiple times in succession. After all that I‘d had enough, I took it to Autozone to test the battery and alternator, the guy said part of the alternator went bad (can’t remember what it was called) which I kinda figured since the battery is only 7 months old. I bought a remanufactured alternator and installed it, but all of these same issues I was having before didn’t go away. Come that same night after I had Test driven the car, I was sitting there with it idling for a few minutes with the hood popped, then I smelt something weird so I got out and saw that my positive battery terminal was on fire, or at least the nut was that holds on the cables. Being still kinda new to cars and how they work, I didn’t know that batteries need to be held in place by something. There is nothing holding the battery down and I’ve been driving the car like that for thousands of miles, I don’t know if that’s something that can destroy a battery or cables or not. The terminal and cable look intact, the Fire didn’t cause any major damage. I was also not the one who installed the battery, it was the last guy who owned it.

so what can we help you with?

Well, after I replaced the alternator, those same issues were present. So where did I go wrong? Is there something else I might need to replace? Why did my battery catch on fire etc

Ok, first, your battery sounds like it shorted out against your hood. Yes they need to be secured down, hopefully your just need another battery and it didn’t damage anything electronic. Don’t know where you are located but know that in certain heat positions the car engages the ac compressor to remove humidity. If your compressor is going bad it can make the engine stall and cut off. Try running the ac and see if same thing happens. If so for now just unplug the ac clutch plug on top the compressor until you can get it replaced.

I would replace the battery. Make sure the battery is tight and secure in place and the cables connecting to the terminals are tight. Odds are that the cables were loose which lead to spark and heat.
