Good evening Scotty,  I'm interested in buying a 2004-2005 Dodge Durango. Im not going to even look at the 2006 and up because of MDS but want to know which is better, the 4.7 V8 or the 5.7 V8? I have heard mixed reviews of the 4.7 and the 5.7 so want to know which is better. Also any other problems that the vehicle itself may have.

if u have to get id get the 5.7L HEMI keep in mind its paired with an unreliable 4 speed auto trans made by chrysler... id even get a ford expedition/ highlander/ pilot

The 5.7L is typically more reliable. It makes more power and doesn't work as hard to move the weight of a full size SUV.

That said, it's a Dodge. Not the best quality so you want to have a mechanic check it out prior to purchase.

Thanks! Have a great night!

You're welcome. You too.

I would go with the 5.7L. The 4.7 L did have problems with the valve seats coming loose. Having said that I had a 2000 Durango SLT 4x4 4.7L for 20 years and only got rid of it recently because of rust issues. During that time I replaced the upper ball joints, shocks, fuel pump, spark plugs, intermediate steering column shaft, 1 front wheel bearing, TPS, 1 front brake hose, calipers, rotors, pads and shoes, exhaust from the cat back 2 times drivers door power window motor and the battery 2 times. That sounds like a lot, but when you space it out over 20 years it really isn't.
