2004 Avalon: Is valve adjustment necessary?

Topic starter

2004 Toyota Avalon with 163,000 miles on the original 3.0 liter 1MZ-FE V6 engine with four cams,  24 valves and VVT-i. I have maintained the oil and filter, air filter, timing belt, spark plugs and transmission fluid, etc., but have never had the valves adjusted. I don't even think about it as it still runs so good. Is it necessary to perform this service if there is no noticeable problem? And what would be a noticeable symptom(s) of valves needing adjustment? Thank you.

I would hope that any "good" mechanic could do this job, but I'd still get references from friends and reviews if possible.  I would not use a dealership for this or any other work.  But that's just my opinion based on experience.

thank you.

The gaps would be out of spec. You have to measure them with feeler gauges.

thanks Joe for the information. I am not a mechanic, (thought I was forced to be one years ago when I owned a 1974 Harley Shovelhead). 😕 So, do you recommend that I take it to a Toyota Dealership or an independent mechanic to have the valves properly adjusted? I have read here that you are not a fan of dealerships, but some independent guys have no accountability and it seems impossible that they could know everything about all cars? Plus I am a recent transplant to California and don't really know mechanics in the area.

With your mileage, yes I would have the gaps checked.
Nobody knows everything , but I'm sure you can obtain a referral to a mechanic who specializes in Japanese cars. See our top FAQ topic for info on finding mechanics in your area. I think you are mistaken if you think dealerships have more accountability. Their business doesn't ride on how well they serve you. It rides on how many cars they sell.

Thanks for your insight and advise.

Supposed to be adjusted around every 40,000 miles.  1995-2004 are susceptible years.  Symptoms would include codes, misfires and rough idle just to name a few.

thanks, Doc. As I just wrote to MMJ, would you recommend a certified Toyota mechanic perform the valve adjustment or would any good mechanic be able to do it as well?
