Hi, I have a 2004 JDM odyssey 2.4 with automatic transmission. It make a rattle noise (sound like a light detonation) when I'm accelerating around 2-3k rpm. This model have the same engine and transmission as the 1st gen acura tsx. I have ask honda mechanic and they ask me to do half engine rebuild but then again they are not 100% sure it will fix the problem. The car itself runs fine. Did anyone ever had this kind of problem and solve it? Any help would be appreciated.
To eliminate the obvious, are you using the correct grade fuel which your vehicle needs?
What was the reason for the engine rebuild from Honda?
It could also be your knock sensor is bad or your timing is off.
Take it to a reputed independent mechanic in your area who has good reviews & have them figure it out.
I use 95 octane v power, it suppose to be enough. They said it have carbon build up and one of the valve is leaking. so they have to take the cylinder head off.
Since the car runs fine, I wouldn’t rebuild the engine as it’s not worth it for a 15yr old Odyssey. You didn’t mention the mileage, but if it’s high mileage, obviously there’s going to be some carbon build up. Did they do a compression test on the engine? I’d rather get another vehicle than rebuild the engine.
Oh, I forgot, sorry. it's about 115,000 miles (185,000 km). They said one of the cylinder have lower compression (130psi), the other cylinders have 185 psi.
If you intend to hold onto the vehicle, price out how much it would cost to instal a used, low mileage engine from a totalled Accord or CR-V which had the 2.4L engine. I wouldn’t trust anyone to rebuild an engine correctly.
I guess thats the most reasonable solution for this problem. I'll just run this engine till its dead and get a salvage one. Thanks for your information.
How'd you get your hands on a 2004 JDM??? It's not even 25 years old.
I live in Indonesia, these cars was quite common back in 2004-2008.
Makes sense. You can’t get them in the US, unless they are 25 years old.
