Rav4 won't run

2004 RAV4 340,000 miles.  Cranks and hits but won't run.  Almost 50 psi fuel pressure, new plugs and has hot sparks.  Tried replacing crankshaft and cam sensors, no help.  Sprayed ether but had no effect.  Removed injectors and all are spraying.  What next short of a new ECM?

You have to check to see if you have igintion problems.  You have to find what makes the ignition system work. Looks like all four of your COP - coil on plug are connected to the ECM but you should check at least one COP  for 12v and ground.  If good then its the ECM control side. Looks like ECM controls or triggers the COP via 12v trigger.  if thats dead then the ECM has no power to it so check ECM fuses or its defective.  many diagrams on the RAV4 for diagrams on ignition - check it out.

he said it has "hot sparks" why would he need to check the coils?

My bad..I was doing two things at once but i STAND CORRECTED- thank you

Thanks guys. We pulled the cam cover and the chain looked good and the valves are not stuck. We rented a compression guage but could not use it due to short threads and a shoulder behind the threads.. Plugged the holes with thumbs and felt low compression on center two cylinders. Added a little oil and compression went up slightly but still felt weak to me. So, I think the rings are shot but think its strange that both center cylinders would go bad at the same time.

2 cylinders next to each other that are low on compression could indicate a bad head gasket.

Thanks to all! At this point, I believe a bad head gasket is the likely problem.

Once again, thanks to everyone.  Since it sputtered and died while running I'm ruling out normal wear of rings, etc. but believe it was a sudden failure. Because there is low compression on the center 2 cylinders I believe the head gasket between those 2 cylinders started leaking.  If we pull the head I'll post the results.  Neighbor says it overheated recently due to a bad thermstat which points to the head gasket.

Timing chain/cam timing.

Going to agree with boatingscotty as to the timing chain needs to be checked out. Jerk the valve cover off to confirm it has no skipped a link or two...

Did you try scanning for trouble codes?

Grasping at straws here but maybe the cat con is plugged. Remove O2 sensor to relieve blockage and see if that helps.

There were no codes

Get a mechanic to check it out see if there are codes, head gasket issues, or a timing belt/chain

340,000 miles....cylinder walls are worn smooth and worn out of shape. Piston rings can't seal for compression. Repair would more than the cost of a factory remanufactured engine.
