Hi Mr.Scotty, I have a 2005 Camry LE (240k miles) with a 2AZ-FE engine & it burns all of the oil before reaching the suggested 5K mile oil change. Should I add thicker oil? I deliver pizzas and do a lot of city & freeway driving daily, please help.
If your engine is burning 5 quarts of oil in 5000 miles, you have a much bigger problem than choosing a thicker oil.
Most manufacturers consider oil consumption of up to a quart per 1000 miles to be "normal" for warranty purposes. (Ridiculous of course but that's the way it is.)
Ridiculous is putting it mildly.
Do a leak-down test to know what is really the cause of the problem. Mostly It could be valve seals or piston rings.
Note: Only if there is no problem related to that after the leak-down test, you need a scan tool to read the codes and know what's going on with the engine. Adding oil or using another brand of oil may really not help.
That engine is on it's last leg. You could live with it and just add oil, but at this point I think you could benefit from using a slightly heavier oil or using Lucas oil stabilizer as a last ditch effort.
