Hi there I am in New Zealand and have a 2005 Ford Fiesta Ghia 1.6 Duratec with almost 160,000km/almost 100,000mi I'm third owner from 121,000km, it was running pretty fine a few days ago last time I drove it however I just got in to go out and while the engine is running the gear selector isn't engaging any gears ie D,R, 1 or 2 - I tried switching off and on again but same result. Anybody got any ideas on what the issue might be? and maybe it's an easy/cheapish fix?

Update: Issue found and it was a simple 5 second fix.. the linkage at the front and bottom of the engine had simply popped off the spline of the selector.. popped it back on and we're back in business... ! so happy about that... however... there's another story/issue
Do you know the service history, has the transmission been serviced regularly over the last 20 years?
Check the simple stuff first, like fluid level and condition, and make sure the shift linkage hasn't worked loose.
