2005 ford focus air conditioning problems

  • Hey Scotty! My 05' ford focus sedan will get spotty air conditioning. I've observed it working decently at times, other times it wouldn't work as well. R-134A is fully charged. Also, my AC will frost up at night, blowing some cloudy mist at me. The mothers fusion does not, after testing hers. It also takes my car a long time to cool down the cabin after being in the sun all day, the mothers vehicle took less than 15 minutes, and blew a lot colder. Fans do work, the coils on the front of the vehicle don't appear clogged. I do not have a cabin air filter, the car didnt come with one. Compressor appears to work just fine. Hoping you can help me out. My car is a 2005 ford focus SE, ZX4. At 141,000 miles (approximately). It is an automatic transmission.

Feel free to include this in your YouTube videos if you wish to do so.

Love your videos! Was even able to correct my father on car knowledge by learning from you! ((I'm 19 and still saving up to move out)).

How do you know you have the proper amount of refrigerant? Was the system evacuated and then the correct amount charged into the system by weight?

The recharge can came with a meter. AC was on full blast, and recirculation was on.

Those recharge cans are useless for any kind of diagnosis. If they contain sealer they can cause damage if the sealant hardens in the wrong places. To properly diagnose the AC system at a minimum you need a full manifold gauge set. To know you have the right amount of refrigerant the system needs to be evacuated and recharged properly. Even a few ounces off can make a difference and overcharging is at least as bad as undercharging.

We did not add any this time. It was about a month or so ago. We just used the metering device.

So you really still don't know if you have the correct amount of refrigerant. As I said, those recharge cans are worthless for diagnosis. You also have no idea what the AC system is really doing without a proper gauge set. It may well be low on refrigerant or there may be some other problem.

If you're not familiar with working on AC systems it really would be best to take the car to a good independent shop for a proper diagnosis.

Try an evac, recharge. @ChuckTobias is right. That might do the trick.
