[Solved] 2005 Sequoia pulsing

I have a 2005 Toyota sequoia limited 2nd with 136000 miles. Just bought is. When the engine is working hard, accelerating up a hill, or at high speed an freeway going up hill there is a slight pulsing. Feels like a momentary loss of power. Probably not noticeable to most people. Once the engine stops working as hard the pulsing stops. Have cleaned the MAF sensor, air filter is good, and has new plugs. I ran some fuel injector cleaning through it and on that tank of gas it was almost gone. But on the next tank it’s back. Is this a indicator of failing fuel injector? Is there a way to test? Thanks for your help.

The fuel filter is in the gas tank on this model. How do I check the fuel pressure. It also says the long term fuel trim is +18%

A fuel filter in the gas tank can get clogged up just like an external filter in nearly two decades and 136K miles.

You check the fuel pressure with a pressure gauge, though it's possible your vehicle may provide that information in live data. It would be best checked when the problem happens to see if pressure is dropping under load.

Your fuel trim is saying the computer is trying its best to increase fuel flow to the injectors.

The fuel pressure is 31 psi at idle. 10 minutes after turning off the engine, I’ve lost about three psi. Used gage borrowed from auto parts store. Don’t have the right scan tool to test while driving. Specs say 36-44 is within range. So it’s definitely low. Inspected fuel lines and there is no visible damage. Guess I need to replace fuel pump and filter?

That may or may not fix the problem, but the pump is obviously out of spec so needs to be replaced regardless to avoid a sudden dead-on-side-of-road situation.

Replaced fuel pump assembly today and the fuel pressure is now 41psi at idle. Seems to have fixed the issue. Will confirm after more driving. Thanks for your help.

Great, hopefully that took care of the problem.

After about 700 miles things are great. Long term fuel trim is at +2% and short term is basically zero. Getting better gas mileage too. Appreciate the help

How old is the fuel filter? Is fuel pressure up to specification?

long term fuel trim is +18%

it thinks it's starved for fuel and it's trying to add as much as it can
