2005 Toyota 4Runner ABS Fail

Topic starter

My 2005 4Runner (6cyl) has 275k miles and has been a great car. I was driving and my check engine lights came on and got a warning sound. My brakes went out. Toyota said I have an ABS fail. They said I need to replace the module which is a part of other braking system. $4,500!  Is this right?  Thank You.

Please clarify if your ABS no longer works or if you cannot break at all.

As far as I know, if the ABS goes out, you still have the brake. Could you explain more what do you mean by "my brakes went out"?

You don't need ABS at all to drive the car or brake. If your brakes aren't working at all I would check the fluid level and look for vacuum leaks to the brake booster as a starting point. I have had a few cars with a failed ABS module and it did not make my brakes stop working, ABS just helps with preventing the brakes from locking up when you brake hard.
