2006 Lexus GS300 won't start -- shows Immobilizer code

I live in Paris, Tennessee, and recently bought a 2006 Lexus GS300.  It has 197,000 miles on it.  The people I bought it from had let it sit for months without starting it, then they hooked a battery tender up to it.  The car started when I bought it, then wouldn't start later that day, so I hooked it back up to a battery tender.  Then it started again, so I took it out for a 45 minute drive, hoping to charge up the battery some.  (I've been told since then that it was useless to do that.)  After returning home, I figured everything was okay, so I didn't hook it back up to the tender.  Well, the next time I tried to start it, it wouldn't start, so I had a friend come by to try to jump the car.  (I've been told since then that it was a big mistake to do that, too.)  That didn't help.  The lights and the panel came on, by the way, but the car wouldn't start.

After that, I had it towed to the Toyota dealership here in town.  There's no Lexus dealership anywhere nearby.  They checked the battery and said the battery wasn't the problem.  A security code came up when they did diagnostics, so they said they needed to remove the dashboard to find the problem.  So, they removed the dashboard and an Immobilizer code came up.  (It cost $390 just to have the dashboard removed.)  Now they're saying that another $1700 will need to be spent to fix the Immobilizer.  Should I have this done and spend that money or should I just throw in the towel???  Or ... what would you do??

I called a few salvage places.  They only offered between $232 and $365 to come take it away.  It would be a shame to do that when it was running fine just recently.

Thanks in advance for any advice or comments.

I would say take it to Nashville. Explain your situation. Say you like the car and you like to get it running again and see what a real Lexus dealer says about it. Good luck

@scottykilmer Thanks very much for your advice, Scotty! 🙂
