[Solved] TPMS light on the dash

Hi, I have a 2006 Mazda3 with about 180,000 miles (runs great) that I bought new almost 18 years ago. It's my daily driver. A couple of weeks ago I had a new set of tires put on and thought it was a good idea to swap the TPMS sensors at the same time. I had the sensors swapped 8-10 years ago too with no issue.  The TPMS system was working just fine before the newest sensors, but I only get a steady yellow TPMS light on the dash now. I brought my own tires and sensors to the tire shop, so I can't get much help out of those guys since I didn't buy it all from them.

The sensors I bought from Rock Auto was the Schrader 29100. The Schrader web page shows that to be the exact sensor for my car - preprogrammed. The new sensors will read back to the tire shop scan tool. The relearn/re-register procedure for my car (in the owner's manual) is to turn the key on (without starting) then back off.  Leave the car sitting for at least 15 minutes. Then start the car and drive for about 15 minutes at a speed above 15-20 mph.  That should be it.  I've tried that several times.  Still a steady yellow TPMS light.

I contacted Schrader and they say that there is nothing wrong with the sensors since they will respond to the tool. They also confirmed I had bought the correct sensors.  They asked if I had the old sensors riding around in the car. I do have them and they did ride home with me in the car from the tire shop, but they have been well away from the car since.  Could that initial ride in the car with the new sensors have done something?

Just for kicks, I unhooked the battery from my car and left it sitting for a few hours.  I thought that might reset everything and give the new sensors another chance to register to my car.  I immediately got the yellow dash light. Otherwise, no change.

I can't find much information about this anywhere and I'm stumped. Please help!

Thanks!!!

Thanks again! I had the old sensors (which were the 2nd set from new...I don't know if they were really OEM, but they worked) so I bought an identical set of them. The tire shop swapped out the Rock Auto sensors and put in the replacement set. BINGO! About 5 miles down the road the TPMS light went off. Everything is working like it should now. Luckily, I still had the packaging for the Rock Auto sensors - I sent them back for a full refund. Thanks again!

You're welcome and thanks for your feedback

Well really, I would never use a non-oem sensors. You have no idea if those things will correlate with the Mazda system. I've had too many problems with the aftermarket sensors that I would never use them in any car I was working on

Thanks. That's what I was thinking...

These days I just buy a tpms system that you can mount on your dash. They have much better info than the single light that only indicates when you are down to 25 psi or so. The sensors show the exact tire pressure in each tire.

The sensor system I buy only cost about $25 and lasts a while, winter often screws them up since I am in upstate new york covered with salt though.
