Hello,
I have recently been searching for used Rav4's as I'm looking for a reliable car. I have come across a Rav4 that seems to check all the boxes:
2006 Rav4 Limited 4wd
Automatic
Odometer: 59337
This car is from a private owner who is asking for $8,000. My concern is in the listing the owner mentions: "This car hasn’t been used much in the past 12 years because I was living out of the country. It’s in very good condition, but does have a little rust"
I am hoping to go see the car today for a test drive- what do I need to be on the lookout for given this car hasn't been driven consistently over the past DECADE? How does this impact the engine? Should this even be something to worry about?
Appreciate any help or feedback!
Ask the owner to check with the mechanic to see if it's in good condition. Is the rust on the frame? But everything checks out, then buy it immediately before anyone else does. After you buy it, try to drive in the highway for a long distance.
Thanks for your input- the owner says the rust is not on the frame, but will definitely check it out myself. Seems like a solid find- why do you think a long highway drive would be worthwhile?
I think it's just superficial rust. I kinda wish we had the picture of the rust. So we know what kind of rust and if it's a good buy.
The other question I have is the maintenance. Cars that sit for a long period of time develop problems from such things as fluid degradation, engine, radiator and brake line corrosion. How has it been maintained? (When was the ATF last changed? The anti-freeze/coolant? The brake fluid? and so forth).
This my exact thinking as well. Is there any way to check for things like brake line / engine / radiator corrosion? I will be sure to ask about maintenance over the last 12 years while it hasn't been driven regularly.
