2007 Mazda 4 cylinder for my first car , when idle the engine pulses like it’s gasping for air (hyperventilating) that’s the best way I can describe it, previous owner said it needs a fuel injector cleanse .. car is very jerky when shifting gears
I will do severe testing to determine which event is malfunctioning in the process . Aside from that what could you infer based on the description I gave . It sounds like it’s pulsing
It's an 18-year-old car and there are many things that might cause the symptoms you are experiencing - as simple as a vacuum leak or as bad as a worn-out engine and many things in-between.
You did not mention mileage, whether the car's maintenance history is known, transmission type, or whether you had a mechanic examine it before purchase. The statement of the previous owner (presumably the seller) about the fuel injectors needing to be cleaned cannot be relied on. You can never trust what a seller tells you. Even if they are honest (which is not usually the case) they may not know what is wrong.
You could try cleaning the MAF sensor and throttle body to see if that helps.
What do you find when you scan it for codes and check live data?

It would be a good first pass at diagnosing the problem. You could also check the obvious things such as filters, spark plugs, vacuum leaks, fuel pressure.
