Hi Scotty!

I recently bought a 08 Toyota Avalon Touring. It has 89, 000 miles ( I know, this is awesome).

I took it to a Toyota dealer today and did a bumper to bumper inspection (just for peace of mind, used car remember??)

They are telling me that there is a crack on the lower control arm bushing and that I need to replace the control arms (both sides).

Also, there is grease on ball joints, and recommend that I replace them as well.

For the sake of clarity, I am sharing the inspection report with you :

The link has actual pictures. Please help me decide what to do !

Kind regards,

Sami

For real peace of mind the car should have been inspected thoroughly by a mechanic BEFORE purchase.

Now that you have it, stay away from the dealer and have the front suspension looked at by a good independent shop.

  • You must replace bulbs if you don't want a ticket. You should be able to do this yourself, armed with a screwdriver, in about 5 minutes.
  • The control arm bushing is done. You don't have to replace it today, but put it on your to-do list. You don't want it to deteriorate to the point where it allows movement. That will start damaging other parts. Same thing with the balljoint. The grease is escaping which means that it is now wearing out at an accelerated rate
  • there's no point getting an alignment now. Do that after you replace the suspension parts.

Stay away from the dealership though

Take the dealer's inspection report and use it for kindling. See a real mechanic.  Like @chucktobias said, the time for an inspection report from a reliable independent mechanic is before the purchase, not after.

Whoa! I can’t really say if those parts need to be replaced or not, with my unprofessional eyes, from the pictures, they seem to be okay for now. If you don’t hear anything clacking or clunking, they should be ok. But it would be good to hear others opinions.

With that said, if they do need to be changed out, those prices they are quoting is highway robbery! I recommend finding an independent honest mechanic, if they really need to be changed.

There is absolutely no clacking or clunking. It rides really smooth, even at 90 mph.

I agree, those prices look outrageous!

The quoted price is for the original control rod and not an aftermarket one.
