Key intermittently fails to start engine on first try

2008 Honda Civic EX, 144k, Automatic. Turning key intermittently fails to start engine on first try. What could be causing this?

Hi Scotty, I've been devouring your videos lately and am grateful someone like you is sharing their wealth of knowledge with the world.

After purchasing a used car recently, I needed to get a jump start due to leaving the lights on. After the jump start I've noticed a few issues:

  • A buzzing noise coming from under dash upon turning the key to the point right before the engine starts.
  • Intermittent failure to start the engine after turning the key fully. The car sounds like it's trying, and it usually only happens first thing in the morning or after the car has been sitting for a while. After the first attempt it turns on ok every time thereafter.

What I've tried to resolve it:

  • I had the battery tested, which came up as failing, so I replaced it, but the issues persisted.
  • I replaced the electronic portion of the ignition switch, which solved the buzzing problem, but the intermittent starting failure remains.

What else should I look at in order to solve this problem?

Thank you much!

I also wanted to add, a scan tool came up with no codes.

Try a new starter relay. Often that

So, it's been a few days since I replaced the starter relay, and it seems to have worked. Thank you Scotty!

P.S. I'm a computer guy, if I can help you with anything please reach out!
