Hello everyone! I’m a new driver and lucky for me my aunt is giving her car not good news is obviously for a 120,00 mile car that went back and forth to New York everyday. According to my mechanic it’s going to need a new fuel pump soon, alignment, plus the starter is on its way out apparently! Before I go spending all this money #1 for those folks that are in the know what is a good OBD2 port scanner that isn’t $300 something that is reliable and well-built. #2 is there anything that id be able to add to the file system to clean it out of there is any problems. I heard putting liquid brake cleaner in the gas tank may or will clean the fuel pump.

What are you trying to do with the scan tool? You need to figure that out first.  Otherwise, for most people, a basic scan tool is all they need, and for that the Bluedriver is excellent (and works with your smart phone).  It is about $100.  I would buy direct from Bluedriver to make sure you are getting the latest firmware and not getting scammed (e.g. clones, etc).

Also, see here for vehicle coverage:  scroll down to “Will Bluedriver work with my vehicle?”

If you need to scan every computer module on the vehicle but still want to pay under $300 (that was your stated budget), then I recommend the Autel MaxiDiag MD808 Pro (it does everything my $400 Tablet Autel MX808 can do except does fewer services.  Also, the MD808 Pro comes with lifetime updates.)  See link: https://www.aeswave.com/MaxiDiag-MD808-Pro-p9591.html  That one is one of the best bang for the buck for a $200-$300 scan tool.

Also, when you get to those price points I only recommend buying from an  authorized dealer if you care about support, service, software updates, and warranty, and to make sure you don’t get scammed.  Some of those from Amazon are not North American models and if you need to have it serviced you have to send to China!  And Amazon is NOT an authorized dealer for Autel.  (That link I put up going to aeswave.com - they are an authorized Autel dealer whom I’ve bought stuff from in the past.)

If you need bi-directional capability, you are looking at easily > $300 and the sky is the limit.  I have recommendations for those as well, but you will have to spend at least $330, and won’t cover nearly everything.  More capability = more money.

Thank you for the direct links 😀 Also to thank you for the new found knowledge! I really don’t know that much about cars and the car is running slightly ruff upon start up but otherwise fine once the Engine gets the temperature . I’m regather stumped why my mechanic would say the car needs all that and there are no check lights on the dash That are lit up??

Well, just because the check engine light does not come on doesn’t mean there aren’t issues or impending issues.

Check the Autel scan tools.
for the fuel pump, change the filter first and then pressure test the fuel line. I don’t recommend adding random fluids into the gas tank.
