Rough shifting

Have a 2009 Toyota Camry with 55K on it. Had the check engine light trip about a month ago, code came back to a speed sensor. Had the speed sensor and revolution sensor replaced. Shortly after, the car started feeling like it was down shifting rough when decelerating at around 15mph. It happens any time i am coming to a complete stop, as the speedometer hits 15, the car almost feels like it jolts forwards a bit. It also began hesitating on acceleration between 10-20mph. So any time I slow down to make a turn or any other reason then try to accelerate again, it hesitates and shifts rough.

Any ideas on what the issue could be?

Are you sure? it's suspiciously low.

what was the full code and description?

Had the speed sensor

so wheel speed sensor? transmission output speed sensor?

revolution sensor replaced.

Never heard of it. crankshaft position sensor maybe?

it hesitates and shifts rough.

can you elaborate on "hesitates". Is the engine RPM dropping, or staying steady and the vehicle just loses speed?

2.4L Engine. The code was P0793, I can’t find the paper work with the full description. Just the one that has the code number on it.

The paper work I received says “speed sensor: Remove and Replace” and “Transmission Revolution Sensor/Input-Output” it wasn’t specified specifically which speed sensor.

The car does have extremely low mileage. Got it in October of 2022 with 31,990 on it, owned by a little old lady. Drive it a lot out of town for work.

As for the hesitation, it seems to get stuck at whatever RPM it is sitting at and just revs there then eventually jolts forwards. It seems to do it the most when trying to shift from 2nd to 3rd gear. It wasn’t doing this until the sensors were replaced.

The code was P0793

Intermediate Shaft Speed Sensor A Circuit No Signal

and has the check engine light returned since the sensors were replaced?

It wasn’t doing this until the sensors were replaced.

These sensors are used by the transmission for shifting, so they are suspect.

It could be something simple like they didn't snap the connectors in all the way, and now it fell off. I would just take it back to the shop you went to, and ask them to look at it.

Check engine light hasn’t returned. Took it back to the shop and they just told me it’s returning no codes and it’s likely something mechanical in the transmission. I just thought it was suspect that I wasn’t having shifting problems until the sensors were replaced. Wasn’t sure if it could possibly be the TCM or just something to do with the software or electronics of some sort.

And that's it? "Your problem. See you later"?

Well that's a really pathetic diagnosis. A good mechanic would verify the repair with data, and should be able to tell you with certainty if the transmission is failed or not, and give you options.

The problem could be the wiring, TCM as you say, or mechanical. It really needs a proper diagnosis. A good technician would be able to tell you right away.

Unfortunately, these were amateurs who wanted to replace some parts, take your money and get rid of you, not to actually fix your problem. Make sure you go to a dedicated transmission shop, not a general mechanic.

I’ll likely head to a transmission shop or head over to a friend that’s a body man for Toyota. See if he might have any Toyota mechanics he’s friends with.
