My father purchased a 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 with a 4.7L v8 from his coworker. He is the original buyer and kept up on all maintenance, and the truck is a California vehicle. It has 130,000 miles and cost my father $8,000. I know Fiat Chrysler products are usually bad but was this a good investment?

That seems like an okay price for that truck (by California standards), but those Rams are not very good - they are known for assorted electrical problems as they age, such as a bad totally integrated power module. These are known to fail all the time. The transmissions on those are also kind of weak. Luckily, your dad got the 4.7L engine and not the 5.7L Hemi engine, which has problems with the lifters. For that money, he would have definitely been better off with an older Toyota Tundra. If he babies that Ram and keeps clean oil in the engine, it could be okay for another few years. Just don't put a bunch of money into it.

Look at motorreviewer.com select FCA and look at the 4.7. I had a Durango in high school that had the 4.7 and that motor took some abuse and still cranked up and took off. I do know that they do have potential issues with the 4.7. In all honesty the transmission and the parts and electronic components are the biggest worry.

Alright, thanks for the info.
