How reliable is the 2009 Toyota Avalon? I know Scotty said something about major oil leaks with 2005-2016 models but on carcomplaints.com the 2009 has the seal of awesome and I didn't see any reports of oil issues. I found a 2009 Avalon with 212k, how much life does it have left and should I buy it?
One of the best engine and transmission combinations that Toyota put out is in Avalon (model 2008 and up). They are very reliable cars if you do regular maintenance.
Thanks!
I am just asking if it's a good deal
Do some research. Look at all the used car listings you can find (craigslist, autotrader, facebook etc.) so you get an idea of how much a car is worth on the market.
Find out what the common problems are. Read the list of recalls. Everything you need is already on the internet.
Ask the seller the right questions. Then learn how to inspect car condition for basic things. The engine & transmission are the most important components. Read our buying guide in the FAQ.
Then you won't have to ask us about every single car advertisement you come across.
Also, you've been "shopping" at least since this forum started. You've asked our opinions about almost every car, truck, and SUV on the planet. I'm starting to wonder if you've learned anything from what we told you, or if you actually plan on buying anything.
I don't even have money for a car yet. I am a beginner driver looking for options so when I get money to buy I know what to get. It wasn't until recently that I knew you are supposed to mark questions as solved so excuse me for that, but otherwise I will probably keep asking if I find cars I am interested in the used market.
I also have asked about so many vehicles because so many could be my dream vehicle. A reliable full sized sedan with column shifter. However there only a few cars that fit that criteria so I try to expand my options a little bit, which is why I ask about do many vehicles.
Thank you for telling me about the buying guide in the FAQ, if I will check it out.
By all means ask us specific questions how to do things, or for an opinion when you're ready to buy a shortlisted car. After at least a year and half of shopping, I expect you already know the basics, like how to take notes, how to determine a price range for a used car and know what a good deal is, or how to look up recalls and research a car and its common problems, etc.
You are obviously reading through pages of ads. So unless someone here is looking for the exact same car as you, in the same city, and has the same needs as you, then the person who is best equipped to answer the question "is it a good deal", is you.
Also when will you have money? The used car situation could be very different if that'll be in a year something.
I didn't realize it could me deciding if it's a good deal or not, which sounds obvious now that I'm saying it out loud lol. I'm probably going to wait out the market now, with the money I have right now, I don't think I can get much, unless it's got a blown transmission. Thank you for opening my eyes, I have been doing all the basics, now it just comes down to me. Have a good one 😁👍.
Don't buy it
Same generation as this Corolla,
Avalon vs Avalon would be same as this Corolla vs Corolla

Safety has evolved
Newer the better, realize the Avalon was safe for the time, but not 2 decades later. Plus, the moderate overlap crash involves airbags. No one can guarantee them working at this age, and fixing the sensors is too much. Look for something newer. You aren't getting a safe vehicle for 1500 bucks, unless its a 15 year old Volvo. For the price and time yeah its heavy so at 20mph-30mph sure but your dead at higher speeds (side and frontal), forget it if you care about that. Save 2500 and get a Volvo XC70.

Compare the Corolla vs Corolla(Auris) crash to this XC70 vs huge truck

2009 should be a lot safer go for that one. I would feel safe in that. My parents had a 97 Corolla (same gen as Avalon) and though their was some build quality, if you got hit, your dead. THis becomes apparent after looking at images online of salvage yards. Compare new vs old and you see just how the older ones do a bad job at absorbing crash ener....
I'd go on forever but 09 would be a lot safer. But if you want safety, make sure to have the mechanic check out the airbags etc. make sure their aren't any airbag sensor issues.
As long as the airbags work (which some might not on a 13 year old car) I'd go ahead and buy it, obviously have a mechanic check it out
No. It is not a good deal.
I don't even have money for a car yet.
Ahh!

09 should be fine, I remember 06 had common premature engine failure
Have a mechanic check it out and realize that 200k is a lot of miles so definitely take care of it and have an inspection done.
Should I, a beginner driver, buy an 01 Avalon? I am least concerned about reliability (193k miles but it's a toyota), but safety. IIHS gave it a good in the moderate overlap crash test, and NHTSA gave at least 4 stars in all tests, but it lacks TCS. It is only 1600 dollars but I am not sure if I would get in an accident and get seriously injured or even killed driving it.
To all: thank you for your answers. I am also looking at a 2009 Avalon, which I will be momentarily be asking the same question. Have a great night!
Should I, a beginner driver, buy an 09 Avalon? Chances are you came from my last post about the 01 Avalon but what about the 09? IIHS gave it a good in all of their tests, and NHTSA gave it 5 stars in all tests except for rollover where it got 4 stars, and lastly it had the 3rd lowest amount of driver deaths (37) per million vehicles in the large car segments according to IIHS. It also has more airbags, and added driver assistance features such as ESC, Traction Control, and Brake Assist. Would this be a better buy regarding safety than the afformentioned car?
Hello! If you have seen my previous few questions I have been looking for Impalas, now I am looking for Avalons! I now know they can come with bench seats and I am looking more into them now. Is a 2004 Toyota Avalon with 106k miles for $8800? I haven't tried to negotiate but I am just asking if it's a good deal for the list price. Any problems I should look for when searching for a second gen Avalon? Please let me know. Thank you.
