Is a bought-used, excellent condition 81K 2011 BMW Z4 s35is worth hanging onto, or are there expensive problems in the future?

No, not in my opinion worth hanging onto. And yes on expensive future repairs. To help with my point, look at resell values of all BMW's comparing percentage of new purchase price to resell price a few years out as compared to other vehicles (pick Toyo if ya want to be shocked ; )
