I just bought a used car 3 weeks ago:
It was showing a RED battery light, on and off here and there. It was not consistently ON at all times.
One day, while the light was ON, and I was close to a mechanic shop, the car suddenly had all the dash lights on and all the systems lights turned ON, on the dash.
The car suddenly lost power until 2-3 RPM and was just dragging very slowly. I could hear the engine rev up, but seemed as if the car was not transferring power to the wheels.
When I pressed the accelerator more, the car suddenly jerked and started being back to normal as if it was fine, but the battery light was still ON. (remaining lights disappeared)
I left the car ON in front of the mechanic shop for him to check. When he checked with his meter, it was 12V with the car running. he asked me to turn the car off, and it was around 10V.
The Mechanic told me the battery was about to die. I ended up buying a new battery and replacing it.
However, when I took the old battery to check at the Auto part store, they said it is in good condition and gives 12.77V, with 694 CCA on a 700CCA rated battery @17°C.
The part shop said you might be losing power because of a short somewhere.
What should I do? Now that I know the battery is not the issue and something else is.....
Thanks and regards,
Raghav

He couldn't have been much of a mechanic if he didn't load-test your alternator.
