Do I need to fix a P0420 trouble code

Hi  I have a 2011 Infiniti QX56 that now has about 100K I got about a year ago to cart my kids around to practice.  I know it's a gas guzzler but I'm ok with that for now.  My issue is that for about 6 months the check engine light keeps coming on and I bought a scan tool which told me the pressure bank 1 on exhaust is insufficient.  I took it to a mechanic and he said it just won't pass smog with that code and to keep driving it.   So I did and it seems to drive just fine.  No issues except for the darn light.  I had to take it into the dealer to get a body repair and they ran their own scan on the vehicle and the same issue came up and they wanted to charge me over 3K for a repair.  What should I do.  I think the dealer is taking me for a ride and thought I would just pay on the spot, but are they kind of right that I should get it repaired sooner than later.  I actually don't think I need such a big car anymore since my situation has changed with carting kids, but it's paid for and I know cars are expensive now so should I sell it now or drive it as is until something happens.  Thanks! {blackemo}:shamefaced:

Your car is not old enough and does not have too many miles that cause your CAT goes bad. After proper diagnosis, if you confirmed that the CAT needs replacement, you should first find out about the engine issues that lead to the CAT problem, otherwise you will end up ruining it again.

The dealer is definitely trying to take you for a ride.  What code(s) did it throw?

P420

That should be P0420.  Start with the easy stuff first.  A clogged air filter.  Second, 02 sensors (2) could be malfunctioning (corroded connections, frayed wiring, etc.) or just need replacement because the pre-heater has stopped working.  Replacing the catalytic converters is a last resort, but the first one the stealerships try to charge you for.
