how do I fix poor shifting

Good Morning,

I have a 2009 Dodge Journey 2.4L I have been gifted.  I am having issues with the vehicle shifting while in motion.  If I ease off the accelerator pedal the transmission will shift as it should.  When changing the Shift Solenoid and Transmission Filter with fresh ATF4 fluid I noticed the old filter had black liquid all over it which I believe indicated a mechanical issue within the transmission.  I am uncertain if the transmission needs to be replaced, or if I have a vacuum leak somewhere, my computer does not provide any indication of an issue with the transmission, I am getting a P0172 (system burning to rich) Vehicle does not show to have a MAF sensor, but I believe that I found the MAP sensor and figured I should replace it since the vehicle has 133k miles on it.  Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated, if someone could lead me in the right direction to getting this issue resolved.

Is your scan tool capable of reading transmission codes?

My scan tool does not show any DTC's on the transmission after I replaced the Electronic shift solenoid. I was driving it this morning and it shifts into gear as it is supposed to. But when I am trying to get it to shift under a load it seems to bog down and will not shift until I remove my foot from the pedal.

If your transmission fluid is black after you just replaced it, you need to replace the transmission. If the vehicle still shifts ok after the fluid change, then you could live with it for a while. When replacing the transmission, find a remanufactured one. You could find luck at a junk yard but it's a gamble.

I spoke with a transmission shop to have the transmission looked at and determine if the transmission is bad or if the valve body is clogged. If I need to swap the transmission I will definitely want to look at getting remanufactured.
