Hey there ,
2012 jeep liberty 3.7L ,automatic transmission, 83800 miles.
I brought my jeep to my mechanic, to top off the oil. I'm loosing about a half a quart every 6 months.
I use regular conventional oil. The oil tech guy told me ," I should be changing my oil every 3000 miles/or 3 months. "
I rarely drive over 3000 miles a year. Should I switch to synthetic oil? Have I been damaging my engine by waiting a year ,to change my regular oil if it's under 3k ??

Once a year is fine for oil changes if you put such little mileage on the vehicle. For further details see the FAQ.
I'm loosing about a half a quart every 6 months.
Check for leaks. Replace PCV valve.
You will likely always have some consumption due to low use.

3,000 miles is 20th century wisdom. 3 months is just crazy.
Should I switch to synthetic oil?
switching to a higher grade oil (as indicated by the testing certifications on the label, GF6 etc.) is good for your engine. Ignore the jingo (like "synthetic") and other marking claims ("high mileage").
have I been damaging my engine by waiting a year
no
