Dear big papa Scotty,
I was gifted a 2012 nissan sentra (2.0L engine w/ automatic transmission) by my father in law. No idea if any attention has ever been given to the transmission. He's a "dump it at the shop when there is a noticeable issue." Car still shifts predominantly fine (occasionally hesitates when shifting from 1st to 2nd but it's not bad). I was thinking about taking off the transmission pan to clean it, replacing the gasket and transmission filter, and filling up what fluid drained out. Is this a wise idea or should I let the notorious poop CVT transmission ride off into the sunset (i.e. blow up whenever it decides to blow up)?
Other mechanics I've talked to just advised to ride it out because those transmissions are notorious hunks of junk. Even though that may be true, I still want to do what I can to help the car last.
Any and all help appreciated!
I would just drain if they shown on my videos and put in the Nissan fluid it can help it last a little longer they are junk but that can help
Thanks for the help!
Wow! Is that the original transmission?
I've changed the bottom pan filter on mine @ 100k miles. It really didn't need changing. It's just a screen.
The Idemitsu CVT fluid worked well.
It is the original transmission. Father in law commuted 1.5hrs for a couple of years just going one way. Majority of the miles are highway so it's not as worn as something that would predominantly be in the city.
Lol. That explains it! I have a 2007 Sentra, and rarely see another one of those 07-12 models on the road.
Do what Scotty said and then sell it for whatever you can get and get another car (which I hope wont be a Nissan).
