2014 - 2018 Toyota 4Runner potential issues

We currently own a 2012 Honda Pilot EX-L V6 with 95,000 miles.  So far its been a fairly reliable vehicle but the timing belt & water pump maintenance is due which will cost me over $1,200 at my local Honda dealership.

I'm thinking about upgrading to a 2014-2018 Toyota 4runner 4x4 V6 4.0 which appears to use a timing chain and is a non interference engine (please correct me if I'm wrong).

  1. On the 4runners, are there any high dollar maintenance items I should be aware of before shopping around?
  2. Any high dollar common repairs (engine, transmission or transfer case oil leaks / issues) that are likely to bite me?
  3. Curious if there are any issues with the window / door lock controls failing? Since the controls are mounted so high on the door that it would be likely to get rain water in and short out the controls.
  4. I once had to replace a heater core in a honda accord which also cost me over $1,000.  I assume the 4Runner / Highlander are installed under the dash as well requiring many hours to replace if needed?

I know the 4runners are bad on gas mileage and honestly it will be used 99% of the time on highways but we do take gravel roads occasionally that can get a foot or more of snow in the winter.  And depending on price, we may possibly move to a Highlander instead but we really like the simplicity of the 4runner.

If you don't mind the price of the Toyota go right ahead they're excellent built vehicles
