Thoughts on 2015 Ford F-150 3.5L V6?

Scotty,

I have a 2015 Ford F-150 with 77,000 miles on it. It has a a naturally aspirated 3.5l V6 paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. I don't do a lot of towing, but it is nice to have a bed when I need to haul lighter things. As well I am going to use this as my family mobile as I have my first child on the way. I just wanted to know your thoughts on this engine and transmission combination as well as if there is anything I should keep my eye out for as we draw closer to 100k plus. Thanks for any input on this!

The engine is alright, not great but not bad either;  it’s definitely not as good as the V8 offered in that same model year.  But it’s more durable than the Ecoboost counterparts at least.  In transverse applications, the water pump inside the V6 was driven by a timing chain and if the water pump ever leaked it was pretty much goodbye engine.  Even if the leak could be caught in time it was labor intensive to replace the water pump.  But……..I don’t believe the longitudinal V6 which should be in your F-150 had the water pump driven by timing chain.  That was only for transverse applications.

As for the 6-speed automatic transmission, that’s far better than the 10-speed automatics on the newer Ford F-150s.  Make sure to replace transmission fluid every 40,000 miles.

As for what issues to expect for your model year see below:
